Pastel Pencil Portraits

Process

Stage 1 – Reference photos
There is a simple rule, the better quality the photo, the more detailed the drawing. Personally, I prefer to receive at least two reference photos to have a different perspective on the subject or simply to advise you on the one that would be best expressed with my drawing technique and style.
Ideally, they would be photos taken in natural light as this captures the true colours and detailed face/body features.
I realise that you may only have poor quality photos, as many of my portraits are memorials. In this case, I will capture the unique characteristics of the subject the best to my abilities.

Stage 2 – Choosing the size
Before you make a decision on the portrait size, please, think of where and how it’s going to be displayed. For more than one subject, I recommend at least A4 size. Please bear in mind that the larger the scale, the more detailed the artwork.
I am also happy to accommodate a custom size. If you are unsure about which size to choose, please contact me, I’m always happy to help!

Stage 3 – Getting in touch
Once you have decided on photos and size, please send me your reference photos and specifications, including any requirements you may have. I am happy to guide you on these if you require my advice.

Stage 4 – Booking fee
I ask for a 25% deposit to secure your portrait space, with the full balance due on completion. My commission list varies throughout the year, with the busiest being Christmas, so please get in touch far in advance in order for me to complete the artwork in time.
Please note it takes me 2-3 weeks to draw a 1-2 subjects’ portrait.

Stage 5 – Drawing process
My portraits are created using best artist quality lightfast coloured pencils on acid free paper. I will send you photos of my work in progress throughout the process. Once your portrait is complete and you are happy with the final result, I will add a protective layer to prevent the pastel from smuggling and UV fading.
My artwork will be also protected with an acid free Acetate sleeve, ready for you to have it framed when you receive it.

Stage 6 – Shipping
My artwork pieces are posted once the remaining balance is received. All of my prices (see the below) include UK delivery.
International shipping is subject to an additional fee.
Please be aware that I am not liable for any customs tax that may occur at your end.

I look forward to hearing from you!

All above prices are based on a single subject, head/torso, no background.  Any additional subject increases quotation by 60% and requires bigger size portrait.
